The statue of a royal couple on the Plaza del Ayuntamiento shows the Catholic King Ferdinand II. and his wife Isabella. In 1482 Ferdinand II. began a series of campaigns against the emirate of Granada. The aim of the king was to free Granada from the Moors (Reconquista). In 1484 the army of the king besieged the towns of Setenil de las Bodegas and a little later Ronda. In 1487, the kings army took the city of Vélez-Málaga and in 1492 finally Granada which disappeared the last Moorish state in Spain. In the following years, Spain rose to a modern world power. As a tribute to the royal couple, Fuengirola's Mayor Esperanza Oña Sevilla inaugurated the statue on January 25, 2014. (Editor/Photos/Video: mit – Source: Wikipedia)
