Ancient treasure cave in the hills of Rincón de la Victoria

The Cueva del Tesoro (en.: Cave of Treasure) which formerly was known as Cueva del Higuerón (en.: Cave of the rubber plant), you can find between Rincón de la Victoria and its urban district La Cala del Moral. Scientists believe that the cave was created within the epoch of Jura more than 145 million years ago. In this time the part of the world which today is called Central Europe was flooded by warm seawater. Within a couple of million of years the salty water flushed subterranean canals which were excavated after the water declined.

The Cueva del Tesoro is one of three well known watercaves in the world and the only one in Europe. The name Cueva del Tesoro comes from a legend which tells the story of arabs who hid a treasure within this cave long time ago. Scientists found a bunch of cave paintings and relicts of ceramics from the Neolithic - the New Stonge Age. It is believed that 2500 years ago the cave was a temple for the goddess Noctiluca. Nowadays tourists are guided through the cave as well as music events take place in it. In 1985 the Cueva del Tesoro was declared cultural goods.
