Fair of Málaga

That's why the Feria exists in Málaga

The August Feria in Malaga is a week-long celebration that takes place in the center of the provincial capital as well as on the fair site. The origin of the fair dates back to the Middle Ages. After the Catholic kings reconquered Málaga from the Moors in 1487, the newly formed city council agreed to hold a festival each year on the Assumption Day to commemorate the reconquest. Over time, the day of the event was moved from August 15 to other days, but always within the second and third weeks of August. The participants of the fair could look forward to processions, bullfights and delicious food. From the 17th century, fireworks and various events were added. The festival is celebrated for a week.

Prelude

Exactly at midnight (from Friday to Saturday), the Mayor of Málaga (currently Francisco de la Torre) opens the fair with a welcome speech before a celebrity gives a short lecture (Pregón). After that there is a big fireworks on Malagueta beach which can last between 15 and 30 minutes, followed by a party with live acts which will celebrated until the dawn.

On Saturday morning at around 11h, the actual opening ceremony of the fair continues. A lot of politicians, singer, equestrian and traditional groups meet at the town hall to walk together towards Calle Larios, where the mayor hoists the flag of Malaga.

The fair begins

Then, around midday, Calle Larios fills up. There is a party in the city center until 18h (Feria del día/day fair). Visitors are offered a program of music and various performances. From 18h onwards, the event continues on the real (fair site) next to the Congress Palace (Feria de noche/night fair). There are numerous attractions for young and old, as well as stalls selling food, drinks and handicrafts. Furthermore, visitors can enjoy flamenco, dance and music performances as well as various entertainment shows in one of the many tents. Meanwhile, a large stage with live DJs keeps the younger crowd entertained.

Pregón

The Spanish term "Pregón" can be understood as an opening speech. In the case of the Malaga August fair, this speech is always given by a celebrity who sends a message. This message is mostly about the city, its people and traditions. The "Pregonero" starts the fair with his speech.
